Sew, Knit, Crochet or Screenprint

Classes are run by Honfleur Home and held at either Marimekko Silver Spring or the Pyramid Atlantic Arts Center.

Adult Spring Knitting - Intro - Starts 4/2/09

Have a blast learning the basics of knitting! In this class our knitting and crocheting instructor will cover:

• How to cast stitches on and off
• How to make the knit and purl stitches
• How to increase and decrease stitches
• How to determine the right and wrong side of knitting, understand gauge, and how to read a yarn label.

Students may select from among few project options. Necessary supplies include a set of size 8 needles and a ball or skein of light colored yarn. [Supplies will also be available for in-store purchase at 15% discount.] Enrollment limited to six students per class.

Beginner, 3 sessions, Thursdays, 6:30 - 8:30 pm, 4/2 - 4/16. $59.

Spring Break Camp - With Parent or Without! - 4/6 - 4/10

Enroll your child -- or you and your child! - in our instructor-lead "You Can Make It®" Spring Break sewing class. You'll create a mini-tote with silky lining and a button or magnetic closure.

• Choose fabric, trim, and lining
• Mark fabric using a pattern
• Lay out and cut fabric, lining, and interfacing
• Construct bag, which involves learning to fuse interfacing, add lining and closures, and trim.

Students' supplies include garment scissors, a tape measure, and pin cushion and roughly half a yard of fabric. [These supplies will also be available for in-store purchase at a 15% discount.]
All ages.

Beginner w/ one pre-req: basic knowledge of sewing machine operation. 5 Sessions, 10: 30 am - 12 pm (with the exception of the last day, which meets 10:30 am - 11:30 am). 4/6/09 - 4/10/09.  $139.

Adult Sewing - Zippered Skirt -  Beg. & Int. - Starts 4/15/09

Enroll in our instructor-lead "You Can Make It®" sewing class.In this course you will create a zippered skirt. You will learn to include a zipper in your custom skirt using your choice of fabric. [Intermediate students may choose to sew darts and a yoke waistband]. Students' supplies include garment scissors, a tape measure, a pin cushion plus roughly 1 to 1.5 yards of fabric and a zipper. [These supplies will also be available for in-store purchase at a 15% discount.]

*Pre-req: the ability to sew a straight seam. Beg/Intermediate, 4 sessions, 6 - 8 pm, 4/15 - 5/6.  $119.

Kids' Spring Knitting - Intro - 4/16

The basics of knitting tailored to child minds and fingers! In this class our super talented knitting and crocheting instructor will cover:

• How to cast stitches on and off
• How to make the knit stitch
• How to determine the right and wrong side of knitting
• The purpose of gauging one's work.

Necessary supplies include a set of size 8 needles and yarn. [Supplies will also be available for in-store purchase at 15% discount.] Enrollment limited to six students per class.

Beginner, 6 sessions, Thursdays, 4 - 5 pm, 4/16 - 5/21. The last session is a make-up/extra-help session.] $79.

Screenprinting on Fabric - New! - Starts 5/2

Learn the basics of screenprinting on fabric. Students bring their own fabric, preferably cotton, and transform it into a work of art for decorative or utilitarian use. Students will explore their own artistic vision by printing their own imagery. This is not a pattern design class; the focus is the technique of screenprinting, also known as silkscreen.

Examples of the skills to be taught include how to coat a screen, expose a screen, and clean the screen after use; how to prepare one's images (hand-drawn or computer) for screenprinting; proper use of the squeegee and registration techniques to expose images onto screens and begin printing. Enrollment limited to five students per session.

Beginner, 4 sessions, Saturdays, 10 am - 1 pm, 5/2 - 5/23. $149

Skirt in a Day! - Beginner - 5/16

Enroll in our instructor-lead "You Can Make It®" sewing class. In this one all day Saturday class you will create an elastic waist skirt -- and this is "not-your-mother's elastic skirt! You will:

• Learn to read a pattern and take your measurements
• Learn to operate a sewing machine
• Layout and cut your pattern and fabric
• Sew and complete your skirt

Students' supplies include garment scissors, a tape measure, a pin cushion and roughly 1 yard of fabric. Intro To Drawing - Beginner - May

This course introduces the language of drawing and the use of various materials. Emphasis is placed on drawing techniques, media, and graphic principles. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate competence in the use of graphic form and various drawing processes. Ages 13 and up. Enrollment limited to six students per session.

Beginner, 6 sessions, Date and time TBA.

Machines are available Monday - Saturday, 11 - 6 pm and Sundays 12 - 5 pm. Book your time online or call the store for a reservation. Walk-ins welcome though we suggest calling ahead to check machine availability.
